Daniel McLoughlin
Urban design and planning student at Cal Poly SLO with hands-on experience in architecture, 3D modeling, and mixed-use development.
About Me
I'm a third year City and Regional Planning student at Cal Poly SLO, studying a PAB accredited degree that is one of five majors at the nationally acclaimed College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Our courses emphasize stakeholder engagement, technical skills, and hands on, in person planning and urban design.
Aside from my coursework, I have three summers of experience at Design Development Architects in White Plains, New York, where I have had the chance to apply my skills in a professional environment. I developed 3D architectural mock ups for client presentations, conducted various client facing site visits, and worked on projects ranging from single family residential to high density urban mixed use.
I am also pursuing a Spanish minor and studied at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in fall 2025 where all of my courses were taught in Spanish. Prior to studying in Spain, I participated in a 2 week Urban Design workshop at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon, where I was able to further apply my skills in an international setting.
Aside from my educational and professional backgrounds, I enjoy travelling, architecture, art history, and enjoying the beautiful nature that California has to offer. I am seeking an urban design internship where I will have the opportunity to keep growing and applying my skills with real world project experience.
Selected Work
Church Street Mixed-Use Redevelopment
A conceptual mixed-use redevelopment study for a prominent site in downtown White Plains, New York. The proposal explores massing strategies for a high-density program including residential towers, ground-floor retail, and structured parking — produced as 3D models and presentation materials during my internship at Design Development Architects.
The Greenway — Santa Rosa & Olive
A land use study and design proposal for a 89,500 SF infill site at the intersection of Santa Rosa and Olive Streets in San Luis Obispo. The Greenway integrates parking into the natural topography to maximize open space — featuring a central public park, community garden, and an 18,000 SF rooftop park above a grocery store with a café and greenhouse. 52 residential units, 29,300 SF of commercial space, FAR of 1.48, 64.6% open space. Prado de Prata — Braço de Prata
A comprehensive urban design proposal for the East Riverside district of Lisbon, developed during the VI International Urban Design Workshop. The plan anchors historical residential uses and commercial activity while improving pedestrian and bicycle circulation. New public spaces — including an arched pedestrian linkage, urban agriculture, and a central praça — foster community interaction while preserving the area's character. A team project produced with an international student group.
